Top 10 Avalon Attractions

Avalon is a great place to visit for family friendly fun and a great New Jersey Shore Experience. Check out our Top 10 Attractions and share your own in the comments section.

  1. The Beach
They say Avalon is cooler by a mile… and it is! The Avalon beach reaches one mile farther into the Atlantic Ocean than other resorts’ beaches! And the Avalon beaches are considered some of the safest beaches in New Jersey, thanks to gentle surf and attentive lifeguards. You’ve got five miles of clean, wide beaches spread out before you… and these beaches are FAR less crowded than the ones in Wildwood. Beach badges ARE required in Avalon, but you can also use your Avalon tags to get onto the beach in neighboring Stone Harbor.
  2. The High Dunes
The Avalon beaches are home to one of the few remaining high dune systems on the east coast. You can learn more on a guided beach walk presented by the Wetlands Institute in nearby Stone Harbor.
  3. The Endangered Wildlife
Keep your eyes out for seabirds… southern Jersey is one of the top ten birding areas in the world! Hawks, raptors, songbirds, and seabirds all visit the wetlands throughout the year. You may find beaches closed because endangered birds — Piping Plovers and Least Terns — have chosen to nest there; be sure to obey all posted signs and avoid any area that is being used for nesting.
  4. Sports Camps at the Avalon Community Center
Choose from baseball, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, basketball, tennis, and even wrestling for the kids! You won’t hear anyone complaining that they’re bored with so many different sports camps to choose from. Avalon has eleven tennis courts, in case you’re worried about getting some play time. You’ll even find a skate park at 29th Street and the Boardwalk.
  5. Community Activities
Craft fairs, art shows, movie nights, boat parades and more. The summer activity calendar is full of great things you can do with your family.
  6. Surf Chairs for the Handicapped
Yes, the Avalon beaches are handicapped-accessible, thanks to a donation of special Surf Chairs by the Women’s Civic Club of Avalon.
  7. Fresh Seafood and Fine Dining
With so much water around, you can’t help but have great seafood available year-round in Avalon! Check out the Avalon Seafood and Produce Market for delicious “Gourmet To Go” appetizers, meals, sides, and desserts, all prepared fresh every day. And be sure to visit Cafe Loren, Avalon’s first fine dining BYOB restaurant. Want to really have your meal your way? Dine at the Sea Grill, where you give your order directly to the chef.
  8. You can’t Have Great Seafood without Great Fishing
Charter a boat for a day-long fishing excursion, or try your luck from the piers and jetties. The Miss Avalon is available for fishing trips, nature cruises, and parties!
  9. Treasure Hunting
Legend has it that pirates buried treasure on Seven Mile Beach, the barrier island that is home to Avalon and Stone Harbor. Whether you dig at random or rent a metal detector, the dream of buried gold is probably more exciting than what you’ll actually find… but the search is half the fun!
  10. The Family Atmosphere
Avalon is laid back and lighthearted — a perfect place to bring your family for a summer getaway! You won’t find the crowds of teens and college grads that you would in Wildwood. Avalon is definitely a family-friendly vacation destination.
